\n\t\t\t\t\tThe Medical Assistant is a regulated medical profession, successor to the profession of \u2018Feldscher\u2019 in Bulgaria, which plays a key role in the healthcare system, mainly in pre-hospital and emergency care.

\n\nA doctor's assistant is a medical professional who provides basic medical care by diagnosing, treating, and prescribing medications. Often it is the unity of a medical person in remote areas.

\n\nWhat is a \u2018regulated profession\u2019?<\/b>

\n\nA \u2018regulated profession\u2019 is an activity that is of public importance or affects the health and life of people, and its exercise is defined by law, regulation or other administrative act. To work in such a profession, you must have a specific professional qualification, aptitude and\/or membership of a state-recognised professional organisation. These professions are included in the official list of regulated professions in Bulgaria.

\n\nAccording to the List of Regulated Professions in the Republic of Bulgaria, the regulated medical professions in the Republic of Bulgaria are: doctor, dental practitioner, pharmacist, medical assistant, paramedic, nurse, midwife, medical technician, X-ray technician, rehabilitator, public health inspector, dental technician, assistant pharmacist, masseur (for visually impaired), orthopaedic technician, lecturer in practice in the specialties of the professional field of Health Care and Kinesitherapist.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tThe profession of medical assistant shall be exercised by persons who hold a university degree at the bachelor\u2019s degree referred to in Article 42(1)(1)(b) of the Higher Education Act and are entered in the register of the professional organisation.

\n\nThe profession of \u2018medical assistant\u2019 shall also be exercised by paramedics who have obtained the educational qualification of \u2018specialist in ...\u2019 and who enjoy the rights of medical assistants with the educational qualification of \u2018bachelor\u2019 under Article 42(1)(1)(b) of the Higher Education Act for practising the profession, and by paramedics who have obtained a qualification for practising the profession attested by a diploma of secondary or higher education or other valid documents for the relevant acquired qualification, who enjoy the rights of medical assistants with the educational qualification of \u2018bachelor\u2019 under Article 42(1)(1)(b) of the Higher Education Act for practising the profession, and are entered in the register of the professional organisation referred to in Article 2(1)(1a).

\n\nMedical assistants shall exercise their profession in accordance with their professional competences as defined by Ordinance No 1 of 8 February 2011 on the professional activities that nurses, midwives, associated medical specialists, dental technicians and health assistants may carry out on their own or on assignment.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t1. medical activities and health care:

\n\na) preparation and performance of pre-medical examination in emergency and primary care in cases where the patient cannot be examined by a doctor - taking a medical history, status (by physical methods of examination - inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation), making a preliminary (working) diagnosis based on the symptomatology, objective condition and laboratory tests of the patient; self-examination and appointment of treatment of children up to 3 years of age is not allowed, except for conditions directly threatening the life of the child;

\nprescribing medicinal products authorised for use in the country and issuing prescriptions in accordance with the procedure laid down in the ordinance referred to in Article 221(1) of the Medicinal Products in Human Medicine Act;

\nmonitoring and recording the dynamics of the disease process;

\nd) measurement and recording of pulse, blood pressure, breathing, temperature, diuresis, electrocardiography;

\nparticipation in the organisation of infection prevention, control and epidemiological surveillance;

\ninterpretation of routine medical diagnostic tests - examination of urine (pH, protein, glucose, ketone bodies, urobilinogen, bilirubin, blood and indicative examination of \"sediment\"); blood count (haemoglobin, haematocrit, erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets, SWE); clinical-chemical studies (glucose, creatinine, urea, total bilirubin, glucuronidated (direct) bilirubin, asAT, ALT, uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides); faeces: occult haemorrhages;

\ng) recognition of changes in basic vital functions (breathing, cardiac activity, etc.) and instrumental tests (electrocardiogram, etc.) requiring emergency medical care;

\n2. manipulations involving:

\na) performing injections - subcutaneous, muscular and venous;

\n(b)providing long-term venous access;

\nc) performing a venous puncture and taking blood;

\nd) Installation of medicinal products through a catheter (probe), drainage;

\ne) carrying out a venous infusion;

\ncarrying out a cleansing and healing enema;

\ng) introduction and maintenance of patency of a urethral catheter in a man and a woman;

\nh) treatment of a wound;

\nparenteral administration of medicinal products and solutions for infusion;

\nremoval of sutures and drains and dressings of wounds;

\nk) removal of a splint;

\ncarrying out lavage of a conjunctival sac;

\ncarrying out gastric lavage;

\nInstallation of a nasogastric probe;

\no) performing aseptic and septic dressings;

\nperforming anterior nasal tamponade;

\nperforming electrocardiography;

\nc) local analgesia and surgical suture of soft tissues;

\nincision of furuncle and carbuncle;

\n3. providing emergency, humanitarian and other activities, including:

\na) carrying out activities for the management of hypo- and hyperthermia;

\nb) providing urgent medical assistance to the victim in the absence of the doctor;

\nc) performing temporary immobilization of limbs and spine, insertion of a cervical collar;
\ncarrying out mechanical haemostasis and\/or topical administration of haemostatic medicinal products;
\n(e)providing and maintaining patency of the upper respiratory tract;

\nf) performing primary resuscitation - indirect cardiac massage, defibrillation and artificial ventilation;

\ng) maintaining the vital functions of the patient in conditions threatening life during transportation;

\nassisting in childbirth until the arrival of a doctor or midwife;

\nadministration of infusion therapy, antiarrhythmic, cardio-inotropic medicinal products and corticosteroids in conditions requiring urgent medical attention;

\n4. conducting trainings and researches.
