BSLAF alerts: Another attack on a paramedic! How long will our colleagues in the CSMP work under strikes and threats?

Within 4 days, we witnessed a second attack on a paramedic from the Center for Combatting Organized Crime - Veliko Tarnovo, and within less than a month, a third aggression against a colleague in Veliko Tarnovo region.

On January 18, 2026, while on duty in the Emergency Medical Aid Branch - Polski Trambesh, our colleague paramedic was subjected to aggression by a patient while providing him with emergency medical care. A report was sent to the police, who reacted immediately. The attacker was detained and pre-trial proceedings were initiated in the case.

The Bulgarian Union of Medical Assistants and Paramedics (UBLAF) warns that violence against medical professionals has become a worrying trend, and the lack of adequate protection for workers in emergency centers puts our colleagues at constant risk. We are concerned that if this trend is not stopped in time, the next case may not end "only" with hits. Violence against healthcare professionals is a threat both to their personal safety and to the safety and health of patients and society as a whole.

We call on all competent institutions to immediately take up the provision of real safe working conditions in the emergency centres in the country. Once again, we draw the attention of the Ministry of Health to the problem. We expect and insist on effective prevention measures and zero tolerance for aggression against our colleagues.

BSLAF insists on providing working individual panic buttons in each colleague on the field in order to have a quick connection with the other member of the team, the regional coordination headquarters and the law enforcement authorities. We propose that medical specialists on duty at the CMS should be equipped with body cameras to be used in a clear legal framework, awareness and limited use, for example, in night shifts and high-risk patients.

Within the first year of its establishment, BSLAF prepared trainings for medical assistants/feldshers for conflict management and de-escalation, work with mentally ill patients, recognition of early signs of aggression and work in mass incidents, which will be implemented further and actively in 2026 across the country. Dealing with aggression was also one of the topics of the First National Conference of BLAF precisely because there was a problem. Regardless of the measures taken by our professional organization to prevent potential conflicts at work, our position is that it is necessary that our members have the support and protection provided by the state in the person of the Ministry of Health.

Merry welcome to the bright holidays!

Dear fellow medical assistants/feldchers,

In the days when the light of Christmas illuminates our homes and reminds us of the power of kindness, hope, love and unity, I would like to express my deep gratitude to all of you - worthy colleagues.
The past year has been full of challenges and evidence of professionalism, sustainability and dedication to our mission. Thanks to your efforts, competence and moral responsibility, thanks to the hard work of the responsible regional colleges and the consistency and competence of the Board of BSLAF, we continue to assert our authority and significant role in the healthcare system.
Let the upcoming year 2026 be a time of new opportunities, of confident progress and of even stronger consolidation of our professional community. I wish you and your families health, well-being and spiritual peace.
May the Christmas holidays give you warmth, inspiration and strength for future successes, and the new 2026 brings more satisfaction, confidence and stability to our common path for the prosperity of our profession and the Bulgarian Union of Medical Assistants and Paramedics.
The Management Board of the Bulgarian Union of Medical Assistants and Paramedics (BSLAF) wishes you a happy welcome to the bright holidays!

With respect,

Alexander Alexandrov
Chairman of the Board of BSLAF

BSLAF joins the protests of medical specialists

Expressing its firm support for the demands for a fair and higher increase in the salaries of medical specialists, the Bulgarian Union of Medical Assistants and Paramedics (BSLAF) emphasizes once again the need for a thorough review and reformatting of the foundations of our health system. There is no way palliative measures related to fiscal governance over a one-year horizon, such as the state budget, to solve conceptual problems and eliminate fundamental flaws. Expression of which are the inequalities and disproportions in the pay with public resource of the medical assistance provided to every Bulgarian citizen. The deficits of this model are clearly manifested by the huge share of the part of the money that flows directly out of the pocket of patients in the form of all sorts of extra payments.

At the same time, emergency care is stigmatised as the ‘guilty on duty’ for the uneven and disproportionate provision of primary and specialised outpatient care in all regions of the country.

There are also no mechanisms for valuing the work of medical specialists and real allocation of funds for their remuneration, despite numerous attempts to conduct a productive and constructive dialogue with everyone.

For all these reasons, BSLAF accepts the stated requests of colleagues as fully justified and morally and economically justified, and therefore calls on its members in all structures to participate in the protest actions with the sign "Protest"!

BLAF: We strongly condemn the violence against our colleagues

The Bulgarian Union of Medical Assistants and Paramedics (UBLAF) once again strongly and categorically condemns the increased cases of aggression and violence against medical professionals.

It is unacceptable for relatives of a patient to use violence against a medical practitioner while he is providing assistance, as is the latest example of our colleague paramedic in Vratsa.

The professional organization of medical assistants and paramedics expresses its support, as well as its readiness to provide full assistance for the protection of our colleague. We expect the competent institutions to carry out the necessary actions in order to achieve justice in this unacceptable for our society case.

Every day on the frontline in unpredictable situations, emergency teams, many of whom are medical assistants and paramedics, take on a huge responsibility to save patients' lives. Often this happens without sufficient resources, personnel and public protection. The decent work of our colleagues should be respected and valued, not condemned, questioned, threatened or pressured. The mutual understanding, trust and respect between society and the medical profession is the foundation of a stable and effective health system.

We draw the attention of the institutions to the problem and invite them to actively take urgent, real and effective measures to protect the medical teams at their workplace.
