Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Bulgarian Association of Healthcare Professionals, the Bulgarian Association of Assistant Pharmacists (BAPF) and the Bulgarian Union of Medical Assistants/Feldshers categorically distance ourselves from any attempts to embarrass and oppose the health care professions, because we believe that they cause irreparable harm to the interests of patients and their trust in the health system.

In our opinion, all those who have chosen the protection of human health as their professional career are equally responsible for respecting ethical standards and protecting the professional prestige and dignity of workers in the sector.

We take this position because we are provoked by deeply unethical suggestions about our professionalism, knowledge and skills and we call on the state institutions to start the long-awaited process of reforms aimed at achieving a balance of interests in the sector.

We hope that legislative changes in line with good European practices and medical standards will be launched in the near future.

We are categorical that this process should start immediately, because the negatives of imbalances in the system are obvious and increase with each passing day.

We expect real actions for an in-depth discussion with the participation of representatives of our professional organizations for making forward-looking and working decisions!

With respect:

Diana Georgieva - Chairman of BAPZG

Lilyana Petrova - Chairman of BAPF

Message to all members of BULAF

Dear colleagues,

In connection with the questions we have received regarding the issued membership cards and the inscriptions on them ‘feldsher’ and ‘medical assistant’, we would like to inform you that the issued membership cards are in accordance with and comply with the requirements of the ZSOMAMSLAZPF. The profession of ‘medical assistants’ is the legal successor of the profession of ‘Feldscher’. As of the date of entry into force of the ZSOMAMSLAZPF in 2024, the persons who have obtained the educational qualification to practice the profession of ‘Feldscher’ are ‘Medical assistants’, this fact follows from § 1(5) of the Supplementary Provisions to the ZSOMAMSLAZPF, last amendment in force since 1 May 2024, the paramedics are ‘Medical assistants’.

According to § 18. Feldshers who, until the entry into force of the ZSOMSAMLAZAF, have rights under § 32(2) and (3) of the Transitional and Final Provisions of the Act amending the Higher Education Act (ZVO) shall enjoy the rights of medical assistants with a bachelor's degree under Article 42(1)(1)(b) of the ZVO to exercise the profession, provided that they have exercised a medical profession for at least two years during the last 30 years. Feldshers who have rights under §3 before the entry into force of the ZSOMSAMSLAZF shall enjoy the rights of medical assistants with educational and qualification degree "Bachelor" under Article 42, paragraph 1, item 1, letter "b" of the Law on Higher Education to exercise the profession, provided that they have exercised a medical profession for at least three years in the last 30 years. The feldsher referred to in paragraphs 1 and 2 shall enjoy the rights referred to in Article 6(2b) of the ZSOMSAAMSLAZPF and, in accordance with Article 6(2b), the profession of medical assistant shall also be exercised by feldshers who have obtained the educational qualification of specialist in ... and who enjoy the rights of medical assistants with the educational qualification of Bachelor referred to in Article 42(1)(b) of the ZVO in the profession and by feldshers who have obtained the qualification of practicing the profession attested by a diploma of higher education or higher education or other valid documents for the relevant qualification acquired, who enjoy the rights of medical assistants with the educational qualification of Bachelor referred to in Article 42(1)(b) of the ZVO in the exercise of the profession and are entered in the register of the professional organisation referred to in Article 2(1)(1).

BSLAF - news

Today the Bulgarian Association of Professional Associations (BSLAF) celebrates one year since it was officially declared an independent professional association.

Dear colleagues medical assistants and paramedics,

Today, the Bulgarian Union of Medical Assistants and Paramedics (BULAF) is one year since it was officially proclaimed an independent professional organization that represents, supports and protects the rights and interests of medical assistants and paramedics.

All of us who have worked and fought for many years to have a BSLAF have stubbornly gone through a difficult and obstacle-filled road until 2024, when the bill for a separate and independent professional organization of medical assistants was finally adopted by the 49th National Assembly and promulgated on May 1, 2024 in the 39th issue of the State Gazette. This marked the beginning of BSLAF as an organization within the meaning of the Law on Professional Organizations of Nurses, Midwives, Associated Medical Specialists, Medical Assistants, Dental Technicians and Assistant Pharmacists.

On that day, a year ago, the time that caused great damage to our profession and to our home healthcare – the dependence of medical assistants and paramedics on other professions in Bulgaria – finally came to an end. We found a valuable opportunity for a new vision and future prosperity of the profession. We have revived the profession from the ashes. This fills us with pride and gives us the strength to overcome the challenges of building the new – part of the path of any young organisation.

The first year of the unification of our profession began with a lot of administrative and organisational work on the board of BULAF – a series of registrations in state institutions, the establishment of regional structures, the integration of the UIN into the NZIS, finding offices, continuous working meetings with state and other structures solely in order to increase the status and authority of the profession. This year we met many supporters and friends of the unification, as well as some enemies. But we move forward with pure thoughts, strength and energy to bring our main goal – a prosperous and respected profession of medical assistant – to completion. We know that to achieve successful results requires tireless, hard work, perseverance and time. Then the facts speak for themselves.

I thank all of you who have provided us with and continue to provide support in order to realise our common mission – the affluent profession of Medical Assistant and the prosperous Bulgarian Union of Medical Assistants and Paramedics.

Happy Holidays, Colleagues!

Be healthy!

With respect,

Alexander Alexandrov
